Kobalt Tools 500

Luck came my way the week leading up to this race at AMS. First, I was hooked up with a garage/pit pass for the weekend. That in itself was really great. But then I also got my hands on a press pass for the weekend. Exactly how that happened is confidential.

In any event, this gave me an exceptional opportunity to shoot the race. There were tons of great images from the weekend, but this is only one as a sample.

Seamless white background (well sort of)

February 6th, 2009

This was my first attempt at a shot with the seamless background style. In reality, by background was actually an off-white muslin material. Sometimes you have to just work with what you have, and this was one of those times.

To pull this off, I setup 2 Nikon SB-80 flashes on the left and right sides of the backdrop. They were placed just behind the subjects and wood panels were placed against the flashes to block excessive light spread. The SB-80s were both fired a full power. The main light was a Sunpak MS-4000 monolight fired at full power with a shoot through umbrella. It was placed camera left just beside me. The result almost looks like a seamless, and certainly would even moreso with some retouching.

Many thanks to Zack Arias who provided the inspiration and some technical knowledge.

Laforet Hawaii project

December 30th, 2008

Not sure how many of you are familiar with Vincent or his blog, but he is a well-known photographer who has reached the point of being somewhat of a marketing engine for Canon among other companies.

In any event, the projects he works on are still very cool. Seems he has starting shifting away from traditional still imagery and into video, albeit with a similar toolset. His blog is very interesting, as he is on the cutting edge and updates content almost daily.

He is currently working on video production in Hawaii using the 5D. Here are a couple of clips linked from his blog. His blog is Vincent Laforet’s Blog

I’m not sure really how I feel about this video movement and what it means to folks who expect that still images are always going to be around.

This was a little concept that came to mind while playing around the pool table. Just a play on numbers.

Baths

One of my new favorites

December 22nd, 2008

This image was recently taken at one of our projects from 2007. My original shoot in 2007 was a bit premature, as the details of the bathroom were not all complete. Nor were my skills for that matter. Since then, I have learned how to balance ambient light from windows and strobes within the room. This detail shot is not yet on the website.
